Saudi- Govt plans to check fire accidents in schools
(MENAFN- Arab News) Director-General of Education in Jeddah Abdullah Al-Thaqafi says that 95 percent of fire accidents in Jeddah's schools are due to electrical short-circuits.
The security and safety administration which conducts monthly checks on schools came out with this finding Al-Thaqafi told Arab News.
Al-Thaqafi added that his administration has adopted a new strategy to reduce fire accidents in schools by strengthening the preventive measures besides focusing on awareness drives training school staff on crisis management and installing sufficient numbers of safety devices in all schools.
'The Jeddah education administration has moved 22 schools to new government buildings in the past six months while 130 new school projects are currently being implemented' he said.
'As part of the new strategy school boards have been directed to educate the school community about the causes and prevention of fire accidents. The programs also include organizing lectures seminars publications and exhibitions' he said.
He added that training programs will be conducted for school principals and the officials monitoring security and safety in school buildings. They would also attend courses and workshops that deal with the prevention of fire accidents and crisis management. Last month more than 70 safety and security officials of schools participated in a training program conducted by the Civil Defense.
'Education Minister Prince Khaled Al-Faisal has ordered the allocation of SR37 million to install safety devices and other precautionary measures in 140 schools and two contracts worth SR30 million have been signed to train security staff' he said.
Responding to a query about the prolonged renovation work in schools during the academic year the official said that there are some vital repairs for whose completion vacation time is insufficient. He added that such repairs are undertaken after schools have reopened but that the students and teachers were shifted to nearby schools until the completion of the work.
He said 26 school projects are being implemented with advanced safety standards in place in East Jeddah.
On the need to start school clubs for the development of various skills in students Al-Thaqafi said 31 clubs have been approved out of a total of 80 such clubs to be opened in the city's schools.
He stressed the important role played by information technology including social networking in modern school education. 'However the misuse of technology by some sections of society can lead to a negative impact. Therefore awareness projects have to be launched to educate the public on the harmful effects of information technology' he warned.
