(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Japan on Friday welcomed approval of a UN resolution denouncing North Korea's human rights situation and vowed continued efforts to improve the conditions.
"The adoption of the resolution demonstrates the international community's strong concerns about human rights violations in North Korea, including the abductions issue," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"Japan strongly hopes that the situation of the human rights in North Korea would be improved, and continues to make efforts to improve the situation of the human rights in the country, in cooperation with the international community," it said. On Thursday, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution condemning North Korea's human rights violations to the International Criminal Court by a majority vote.
The contents of this year's resolution is the harshest of all similar documents authored by Japan and the European Union in the past 10 years.
The resolution also urged the UN Security Council to refer North Korea to the International Criminal Court and to consider targeted sanctions against its regime for the repression of its citizens. The resolution is based on a report released in February by UN Commission of Inquiry
