Woman seeks divorce from heavy smoker

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  An Arab woman has approached the Ras Al Khaimah Courts seeking separation from her husband who is a heavy smoker.

The plaintiff told the Family Counselling Section of the RAK Courts that her husband has turned her life into "hell" due to his heavy smoking habit. "I tried hard to help him give up smoking which has badly affected my health and almost choked me to death but to no avail. I had to leave the house several times," she said. Her husband sometimes woke up from sleep to smoke and she would be coughing for a long time.

Jassim Al Makki, Head of the Family Counselling Section, said the recent increase in divorce cases in the emirate was mostly due to a lack of religious awareness and due family culture. "Some husbands have also failed to support their families, let alone their irrational desire to imitate and admire social superiors."

Most of the couples who approached the court seeking divorce were newly married. They were impatient, did not want to suffer any financial burden and wanted to get a fixed monthly alimony, he added.

Al Makki told Khaleej Times that his section has identified 595 reasons behind family disputes.

"On top of the disputes that ended in divorce was failure to financially support the family and meeting the household's needs at 89, followed by 49 cases of failure to provide accommodation and maintain furniture."

The other reasons include husbands' indifference, staying up late outdoors more often, relatives' interference, and addiction to web browsing, he said.

"Consultations offered on phone have solved many disputes in the beginning stage itself in view of the local traditions that opt for non-official and amicable channels to handle family disputes."

The Family Counselling Section helps the RAK Courts save time and confront people involved in cases in a non-official way. The staff counsellors have settled many difficult and complicated disputes.
