China vows no change in developing ties with Taiwan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) China said Wedneaday it will not change its policies regarding the promotion of relations with Taiwan, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported, desipite the pro-China ruling party's crushing defeat in local elections last month.

Fan Liqing, spokeswoman with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks at a press conference in response to a question on possible impacts on cross-Strait ties after the Taiwanese election.

Fan also noted that Beijing's opposition against "Taiwan independence" is "firm and unshakable," according to the report.

She also urged Taiwan to make efforts to advance the development of cross-Strait ties and ensure cross-Strait peace and stability when issuing policies.

China and Taiwan separated after a civil war in 1949, but Beijing still sees the island as its territory. Taiwan's relations with China have eased since Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou took office six years ago. However, Ma resigned as chairman of the ruling Kuomintang Party in response to the party's massive defeat in the November 29 local elections.
