US condemns "terrorist" attack in Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US on Wednesday "strongly condemns" what it described as a "terrorist attack" that hit a school bus in Yemen.

At least 15 female students died when a bomb went off as they went through a checkpoint operated by Houthi rebels in Radaa, in Baydha province.

"We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the victims of this terrorist attack," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said in a statement.

"The Yemeni people have lived with senseless violence for far too long and the blatant disregard for the lives of Yemeni civilians inherent in this attack only underscores the brutality and viciousness of those seeking to block the path to peace and reconciliation," added Psaki.

She added the US "remains firmly committed to our bilateral partnership with Yemen to counter the shared threat posed by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)." The AQAP have been fighting both Shia Houthi rebels and the Yemeni army since former President Ali Abdullah Saleh fled the country after Arab Spring protests in 2011.
