FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kumon Educational UK and their Corporate Social Responsibility partner the National Literacy Trust are approaching the end of their first year in partnership together; during which Kumon are delighted to have raised over £19000 for the charity.

Funds were raised through a variety of events across the year each with a literacy theme; Kumon Associates took part in a Where’s Wally Fun Run participated in a World Book Day Book Swap baked for a Great Literacy Bake Off dressed up for Fang-tastic Friday and took part in a Terror-ific Pumpkin carving contest.

During July and August Kumon study centres and Associates across the country took part in the Kumon Summer Festival of Reading which included a Spectacular Sponsored Summer Read where students were given an independent target to work towards to further build their love of reading.

And finally Kumon sponsored a Mary Poppins themed BookBench which formed part of a path of similar benches lining the streets of London as part of the National Literacy Trust and Wild in Art’s Books about Town initiative. Kumon’s very own Mary Poppins handed out free copies of the classic novel to children and spoke to them about their favourite parts of the story. The BookBench was later auctioned off for an impressive £5000.

Kumon wholeheartedly share the National Literacy Trust’s ethos that reading skills are vital for children’s development and are thrilled that funds raised by them in 2014 will go towards helping the charity support schools in underprivileged communities and motivate children to discover reading for pleasure.

One person in six in the UK struggles with reading and poor literacy skills impact negatively on education employment health happiness and family life. The National Literacy Trust was a natural CSR partner for Kumon UK to choose given their shared values. All of the charity’s work is centred on the belief that education has the power to break the cycle of poverty and the National Literacy Trust aims to help all children reach their full potential by developing good literacy skills.

Lisa Rootes the National Literacy Trust’s Head of Partnerships said: “The National Literacy Trust is very grateful to Kumon UK for the funds raised to support the work of the charity. Thank you to all involved.”

Natalie Bailey Kumon UK’s Brand Relationship Manager said: “I am so pleased with the level of engagement and of course with the amount of money raised from Kumon study centres and Associates in our first year of partnership with the National Literacy Trust. I think everyone has really bought into the value of working with a charity which shares so many of our values. We now look forward to hearing how the £19000 raised will help share our love of reading with disadvantaged children across the UK.”
