Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery sponsors First International Vitamin D Conference

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM))   Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery, BHAS, in Dubai, recently lent its support to the 1st International Vitamin D Conference and Health Outcomes as a sponsor. The event was held last month at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel, Dubai.

Recent studies released by the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi show that more than 70 percent of the Emirati population have sub-optimal levels of Vitamin D in their blood, making them deficient by international standards. Vitamin D deficiency leads to bone health problems like osteomalacia that makes bones soft and brittle and affects calcium metabolism. Vitamin D is also essential for the optimum working of the endocrine system.

"Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery backed the recently concluded Vitamin D Conference because the majority of the population in the UAE suffers from a deficiency in the vitamin. Sufficient sunlight exposure is essential for maintaining adequate vitamin D levels and with the UAE enjoying sunshine for almost all of the year the results are confusing and alarming. We hope through the discussions and the goals set at the conference, we can make inroads in mitigating this deficiency that is plaguing the UAE," said Dr. Shajir Gaffar, the CEO of BHAS.

The event was attended by 223 doctors, professors and health care providers and the discussions predominantly centered around the rich contents of the 12 research papers presented during the conference - topics varied from day to day exposure of sunlight to the relation of chronic diseases like diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases to Vitamin D deficiency.
