(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki expressed on Tuesday little comfort on the decline of violence in Ukraine, stressing that there are "some positive steps" from the Russian side.
In a press conference, Psaki said that "there have been some positive steps, but I don't want to overstate that, in the last couple of days as it relates to a decrease in violence.
"As you have seen over the course of the last couple of days, while we still have remaining concerns, we would also welcome reports that violence has decreased markedly over the last few days in eastern Ukraine," Psaki said.
However, she added, "there are ongoing aggressive actions as it relates to Russia's incursion into Ukraine that needs to change in order for our approach to sanctions to change.
"But, you know, obviously, the decision was made that legislation provides the president to waive the sanctions provisions as appropriate, and when determined to be in the national security interests of the United States. So, it provides that flexibility, as well," Psaki said.
Psaki noted that this was also an opportunity to advance the prospects for a lasting political solution.
