Australia Boosts Security of Indian Cricket Team


(MENAFN- QNA) Australia ramped up security around touring Indian cricket team after three people were killed in a Sydney cafe hostage incident, officials said Tuesday.

Security force killed the lone gunman to end the 16-hour siege. Officials did not confirm whether friendly gunfire killed two hostages.

Queensland state Premier Campbell Newman said the government is ensuring the safety of players and fans although there is no specific threat.

"We will have all available officers out there at public venues such as the Test at the Gabba and around the streets and the suburbs of the cities and towns of Queensland," he said.

India's Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said Australian authorities told our government that the team's security has been enhanced.

"Indian cricket team is a national treasure their security is top priority. Australian authorities confirmed they have significantly increased security of the team," he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India said it is keeping a close watch on the unfolding events there.

India is currently playing a four-Test series in Australia and the second Test in Brisbane starts Wednesday.
