US confirms 18 airstrikes in Syria, Iraq over weekend


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US-led coalition against ISIL carried out nine airstrikes in Syria and nine others in Iraq over the weekend, from December 13-15, the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) confirmed in a press release Monday.

In Syria, "eight airstrikes near Kobani destroyed nine ISIL fighting positions, two ISIL buildings, two ISIL staging positions and also struck another ISIL fighting position," the statement said. In addition, "near Abu-Kamal, an airstrike destroyed an ISIL vehicle." The coalition used fighter and bomber aircraft for the operation.

In Iraq, "three airstrikes near Mosul destroyed an ISIL fighting position and struck three tactical ISIL units and suppressed an ISIL heavy machine gun position," the statement affirmed. "Near Sinjar, an airstrike destroyed an ISIL compound and struck a second ISIL compound. Near Hit, an airstrike destroyed an ISIL vehicle, a trailer and an excavator." The coalition also hit targets near Al-Qaim, where "an airstrike destroyed an ISIL excavator," near Ramadi, striking two ISIL vehicles, near Samarra, where "an airstrike stuck a tactical ISIL unit," and near Kirkuk, destroying an ISIL vehicle and bunker and struck an ISIL tactical unit," the statement said.

For the Iraq operation, the US-led coalition employed fighter, bomber, attack, and remotely-piloted aircraft (drones).
