Kerry in Vatican, discusses Mideast, Guantanamo Bay camp

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US Secretary of State John Kerry met with the Vatican's Secretary of State Pietro Parolin Monday, and discussed recent developments in the Middle East, and the Vatican's support in efforts exerted by Washington to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

During the meeting, Kerry affirmed his country's commitment to avoid escalation of tensions and violence in the Middle East, as well as commitment to promote a resumption of negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, Vatican Press Office spokesman Federico Lombardi said in a statement.

Discussions also addressed Washington's desire to close the Guantanamo Bay prison with the Vatican's assistance in seeking adequate humanitarian solutions for current inmates, added the statement.

Kerry's unannounced visit to the Vatican is part of his current diplomatic round in Rome to hold bilateral talks with Russian and Israeli officials regarding regional issues.

Earlier, the US Secretary of State met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discussed recent Israeli escalation in Jerusalem and Palestinian territories.

Kerry met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Sunday, during which they discussed developments of situations in the Middle East region, Ukrainian and Syrian issues, and proposals to launch new initiatives to the UN.
