Qatar- Al Asmakh sculpture symposium opens

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Twelve artists from nine countries are taking part in the first Al Asmakh International Sculpture Symposium 2014 which runs until December 26 at Al Asmakh Farmhouse, Umm Salal Ali.

Under the patronage of Sheikh Faisal bin Qassem Al Thani, Regency Art and Wyndham Grand Regency Doha yesterday launched the inaugural symposium.

The week-long cultural event will witness artists express creativity by capturing the beauty of Qatar through visual arts.

They include Ali Altekhais (Saudi Arabia), Gamal Sayed (Egypt), Mahgoub Babikir (Sudan), Salim Omar Al Marhoon (Oman), Salah Ben Amor (Tunisia), Sylviane Courgeau (France), Stefano Sabetta (Italy), Mohammed Al Atiq and Talal Al Dhefairi (Qatar) and Carolina Palmero, Laura Marcos and Maria Trinidad (Argentina).

Hassan Ibrahim Hassan Al Asmakh, Vice-President, Regency Group Holding, told a press conference at Wyndham Grand Regency Doha that the artists were chosen through screening, considering their works. Apart from creating a sculpture on the beauty of Qatar's nature based on their background and experience, the artists will also participate in activities, including lectures and museum visits.

All works produces by the artists will be exhibited at a reception in Wyndham Grand Regency Doha's lobby on December 24 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

"The works would not be for sale and would be given to us for collection and display to promote the culture of sculpture," Al Asmakh said, adding sculpture is not at the forefront of the art scene in the Middle East.

He hoped the symposium will be one of the historical and cultural pillars of Regency Art programme to offer talented artists a platform to showcase their artistry and works and strengthen Qatar's status on the map of global art. Stressing the role sculptures play as a form of expression and conveying important message, he said the symposium is the starting point of a larger sculpture symposium next year.

The event is organised by Regency Group Holding with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage and is sponsored by Dar Al Sharq Group, Gulf Crafts, Al Fath Advertising & Printing, Art Friends and Regency Fleets.
