Oman girls stumble in opener


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman got off to a sour start in the inaugural GCC Twenty20 Gulf Cup women's tournament on Monday succumbing to an eight-wicket loss against Qatar in Al Amerat.

In the day's other match UAE coasted to a 34-run win against Kuwait at the same venue.

Qatar's Zeinab Jamir claimed a match-shaping three for 13 to help dismiss Oman for paltry 65 in 18.2 overs after the home team chose to bat first.

Ayesha Mohammed (2-12) and Aisha Abdur Rehman (2-8) picked up two wickets each with not a single Oman batswoman managing to put up a double-digit score. Oman skipper Sunayna Devaiah top-scored with nine runs while the hosts' batting finished with four ducks.

Qatar's reply to the 66-run chase was sound as it reached the target in 13.3 overs. Opener Hiral Agarwal hit 23 not out and No 4 batswoman Ayesha struck a pacy 15-ball 19 not out to take their team home.

Babli Kushan and Akshadha Gunasekar took a wicket each for the hosts.

In the other game UAE slammed 133 for one and then restricted Kuwait to 99 for nine. UAE opener Subha Venkataraman struck an unbeaten 52 to become the tournament's first player to hit a half-century. Her opening partner Esha Oza made 47. Later UAE's S Samiya claimed three for 17 and Heena Hotchandani took two for 11 to guide their team to victory.

Later Kanak Khimji Oman Cricket chairman presented player of the match awards to Qatar's Ayesha and UAE's Subha.

Brief scores: Oman 65 in 18.2 overs ( Zeinab 3-13 Ayesha 2-12 Aisha 2-8) lost to Qatar 66-2 in 13.3 overs (Hiral 23 n.o Ayesha 19 n.o).

UAE 133-1 in 20 overs (Subha 52 n.o Esha 47) beat Kuwait 99-9 in 20 overs (Maryam Omar 41; Samiya 3-17 Heena 2-11).
