Omani photographers need to expand their scope, says Steve McCurry

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Some of the iconic photographs from celebrated photographer Steve McCurry's collection go on display from Tuesday at the Bait al Zubair museum.

The collection titled 'South South East: A life in pictures' features over 40 images from his journeys into the Indian subcontinent and its immediate neighbourhood.

While Afghan Girl his 1984 photograph of an Afghan refugee that is one of the most enduring images of the 20th century will take pride of place the three month long exhibition will feature works that will be on display for the first time in Oman.

Speaking to Muscat Daily before the opening McCurry - who despite having come as close as Yemen and Dubai in the past is making his first visit to Oman - spoke of being surprised it took him so long to visit the sultanate.

'I had heard great things about Oman from photographer friends of mine who had done some work here' said McCurry who spent much of his first day in the country on Monday 'walking and clicking' around the Mutrah Souq and described it as 'an amazing experience'.

'I love going to different places. I love coming to a place like Oman having the opportunity to explore and learn about the culture here' said McCurry who has travelled across six continents in a career spanning three decades covering conflict zones lost cultures and more recently fashion calendars.

It's a work ethic and career model to aspire to for the many budding photographers in Oman who hope to make a name for themselves overseas. A challenging proposition McCurry said 'It takes a lot of time and a lot of work.'

After graduating from college he had to make his way across India with essentially a bag of clothes and film.

'There's some luck involved' he admitted counting himself fortunate to have started his career primarily with the National Geographic. The magazine's reach and resources helped 'get his work out there'. Today his portfolio includes scores of magazine and book covers more than a dozen books and several exhibitions.

It's a compelling body of work. 'You'll have to have one. If you're working in Oman you'll probably want to expand the scope of your work to include not only Oman but all of the Middle East and eventually beyond that.'

Though McCurry himself will only be in the country a short time shutterbugs have until the end of February to look at some of his most defining work up close and learn.
