Political party shuts down eastern Pakistani city

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) After the killing of one political worker in eastern Faisalabad city and a partial shutdown in southern economic hub Karachi, a dominant political party Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) on Monday blocked all the entry and exit points of Lahore city.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan called for anti-government protests against the alleged rigging in 2013 general elections.

The protestors entered the metro bus track blocking the traffic inside the city. Before the protests, Khan in a statement said, "I want to apologize to the residents of Lahore. We have been holding protests since the past four months but the government has left us with no other option but to take to the streets." Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid said, "PTI chief Imran Khan was maligning all including democracy, government and other institutions." The government and PTI negotiation teams discussed terms of reference for formation of judicial commission to investigate election rigging on Sunday.

The protestors burned tires and put up barriers to close several roads including Amar Sadhu, Yateem Khana, Bhutta and Defense Chowk inside the city as well as blocked different entry and exit points of the provincial capital.

Most of the educational institutions and business centers were closed due to security threats. The government has deployed around 19,000 police personnel to avert any clash between the PTI and ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz workers.

Earlier in Faisalabad, the clashes among the party workers turned violent and resulted in the killing of a PTI worker and left dozens of others injured.
