UAE- Is your business guilty of pester power

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Adam Zacharias asks marketing departments everywhere not to bombard his phone with spam Get the message (just don’t send it)

I don’t mindbeing advertised at if that’s the correct expression which it almost certainly isn’t.

After all adverts in this publication probably contribute a fair portion of my wages online commercials keep services cheap or free and movie trailers let us know which rubbish comedy sequel or slasher flick is out next weekend.

So why is it that I find one particular form of advertising so relentlessly irritating

Having spoken with assorted friends and colleagues I’ve discovered that all of us are on some text message spam list or another – receiving daily updates about a nightclub we’ve never been to or a ‘HOT NEW DEAL!’ on an apartment we can’t afford to buy.

To me these messages feel more intrusive than any other form of salesmanship. They can’t be ignored they often arrive with aggravating frequency and it can prove a labyrinthine task to opt out of a list once your details have been tattooed onto it.

In fact as a consumer text message adverts serve the polar opposite purpose than intended. When a brand bombards me with unwanted messages such a cheap sales trick inevitably makes me view that brand as clueless sneaky and desperate – regardless of my previous impression.

I’ve actually stopped frequenting a regular establishment in Garhoud after winding up on its daily spam list.

After calling and requesting to be taken off three times to no avail I eventually had to have a stern word with the manager – telling him I wouldn’t step foot on his premises until I stopped being harangued into stepping foot on his premises.

So for any business owners and marketing hotshots reading this – please use more original less invasive ways of getting our attention. Pester power is not your friend.
