France condemns violence that caused death of Palestinian minister

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) France has condemned the violence that led to the death of Palestinian official and former Deputy Minister Ziad Abu Ein, who died after being physically abused by Israeli border guards.

"France condemns the violence that led to the death of Ziad Abu Ein," a Foreign Ministry spokesman said, in a statement late on Wednesday.

Expressing condolences to the victim's family, French authorities said that they associated themselves with the bereavement of the Palestinian people.

"We call on the Israeli authorities to shed all light on the circumstances of this drama," the statement added.

France also called on all sides to exercise calm and ease tensions in the particularly charged atmosphere in the West Bank and Jerusalem at this time.

Abu Ein was part of a peaceful demonstration that was attempting to gain access to Palestinian olive groves that had been confiscated by Israel.

The Israeli border police fired tear gas and physically assaulted and arrested several Palestinians although they were demonstrating peacefully.

Israeli border guards were seen live on TV and were photographed pushing, grabbing and choke holding Abu Ein, who later succumbed to a collapse and died on his way to hospital.
