Interior minister meets Dutch foreign minister

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)   Interior Minister Hussein Majali, who is currently visiting the Netherlands, met the Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders yesterday in Amsterdam in the presence of Minister of Municipal Affairs, Walid Masri.

Majali is leading a Jordanian delegation to meetings currently being held to take a firsthand look at the expertise of the Netherlands and other European Union countries in applying decentralization, local development and governance.

The minister said that the government had prepared laws on decentralization and municipalities that will be applied soon after these pass various constitutional and legal stages.

These laws, he said, aim to achieve development, reform and good governance, and engage all segments of the society in decision making related to the future of the country and its citizens.

He said ushering in the process of decentralization requires institutional capacity building of the staff of the ministries of interior and municipal affairs. Lessons learnt from international expertise will also help towards enhancing their skills.

Majali also spoke about the burden being shouldered by the Kingdom as a result of hosting Syrian refugees, pointing to social, economic, political and security problems that emerged due to the influx.

The Dutch minister praised the reforms being carried out by Jordan in various fields and voiced his country's readiness to help Jordan to continue the reform process.
