Qatar- Oryx GTL sponsors third national science contest

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Oryx GTL has extended its commitment to educational initiatives of the Supreme Education Council (SEC) by agreeing to sponsor the National Science Competition, now in third year.

The aim of the competition, open to all Independent schools for boys and girls in Qatar, is to improve skills of science teachers and develop passion among students for the subject. By applying science in practical contexts, students can better understand how scientists work and apply problem-solving and other skills to solve scientific problems.

The Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahid Al Hammadi, said,"The competition has always been a subject dear to our hearts at the SEC, as we believe that science is a catalyst for major achievements, and that encouraging students to compete in scientific topics will further enable them to succeed in a scientific career.

"We thank ORYX GTL for sponsoring the competition and look forward to enhancing the engagement of the private sector in our activities. We share a common goal which is building a better future for our country through our students who are one of the most valuable resources."

Abdulrahman M Al Suwaidi, CEO, ORYX GTL, said, "The company has a proven track record of supporting learning initiatives in Qatar, and we are proud to be the first sponsor of the competition. We hope that by supporting students in this discipline at their early age, we are helping inspire scientific minds and nurture problem-solving capabilities which will serve Qatar well on our collective journey towards 2030."

The competition is the latest in priority educational and social initiatives ORYX GTL supports as part of its corporate social responsibility programme, the theme of which is 'capacity building'.

The competition, expected to attract contributions from about 100 primary, 60 preparatory and 40 secondary schools, supports and complements mainstream learning by highlighting the importance of scientific inquiry in the advancement of education. It encourages teamwork and promotes collaboration among students in their quest for academic excellence. The winners will be announced at the Education Forum in May 2015.
