Qatar- Sustainability Challenge winners named

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy has announced winners of the Qatar Environmental Sustainability Case Study Challenge at Qatar National Convention Centre.

The winning teams - English Modern School Al Khor (EMS) in the secondary school competition, and Qatar University (QU) in the university competition - each won $10,000 which will be given to schools for equipment purchases and scholarships.

Yasir Al Jamal, Acting Assistant Secretary-General for Delivery Affairs at the committee, said, "We congratulate QU, the school and all teams who were finalists in the competition.

"It was exciting to see so many students with so many brilliant ideas about how the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar can generate enthusiasm about protecting the environment and promote innovative ideas that can help the country meet its sustainability targets."

The competition, which was open to all secondary schools and universities, challenged teams to identify a pressing environmental challenge in Qatar, assess its impact on society, and develop a marketing campaign that will mobilise the youth to get involved in solving the issue.

The concepts were assessed by a panel of judges from the committee who also reviewed the projects based on criteria, including the quality of research and originality of marketing strategies.

EMS proposed to tackle the challenge of solid waste management through recycling campaigns targeting communities. It's presentation, which included an original video designed for YouTube, proposed a grassroots awareness campaign in local schools that would be reinforced by a mobile application teaching kids how to properly separate waste for recycling.

During their background research, EMS students surveyed about 100 people to learn about their recycling knowledge.

More than 500 students registered as part of 22 university and 72 secondary school teams.

The top four finalists in the secondary school competition included two teams from EMS Al Khor campus, International School of London Qatar, and Middle East International School.

College of North Atlantic Qatar and QU were finalists in the university competition.

In a surprise announcement during the awards ceremony, the committee doubled the prize for the winners in recognition of their effort put in presentations.

The top winning team will receive $10,000, followed by $6,000 for second, $3,000 for third and $1,000 for fourth places.

University team awards include $10,000 for first place and $6,000 for the second, along with the chance of getting an internship placement with the committee and receiving further support to translate their concepts into national campaigns.
