King back home after US trip


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)  His Majesty King Abdullah II returned home on Monday following a working visit to the United States during which he held a summit meeting with US President Barack Obama and also met senior US officials, Congressional leaders as well as representatives of intellectual, academic and research institutions in Washington.

The meeting between His Majesty and the US President focused on the Jordanian-US strategic partnership, ways to boost it, the latest developments in the Middle East, mainly in Iraq and Syria, efforts of the international community to fight terrorist organizations as well as efforts to achieve peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Upon arrival, King Abdullah was received by His Royal Highness Prince Raad Bin Zaid, the Chief Chamberlain, the prime minister, the Senate president, the Lower House speaker, the president of the Judicial Council, the Royal Court chief, the director of the King's Office, the president of the Constitutional Court, the King's advisors, the ministers, the mayor of Amman, the army chief and the directors of the departments of intelligence, the public security, the civil defence, the gendarmerie and the US ambassador to Jordan.

His Majesty's visit resulted in the renewal of a grant worth $1 billion annually for another three years, as well as the United States' approval to issue a third loan guarantee which allows Jordan to borrow from international financiers at low interest rates.

In a joint press statement following the meeting, the King thanked the United States for its support to Jordan which comes at a very difficult time as the Kingdom is hosting about 1.5 million Syrian refugees, equivalent to almost 20 per cent of its population.

The King also met with US Vice-President Joe Biden and discussed with him Jordanian-US ties, means to further boost them, the latest developments in the Middle East and efforts to achieve peace, based on the two-state solution.

Talks also dealt with the developments in Syria, and the international efforts to fight terrorism and extremism.

His Majesty also met with top members of the US Senate and the House of Representatives and discussed with them bilateral ties and regional and international issues, the fight against terrorism and extremism, developments in Iraq and Syria as well as efforts to bring about peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.

The King also met with US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew in Washington and discussed ways to boost cooperation between the two countries, especially in economic field.

He also met with US intellectuals and academic figures and presented them with his insights into the latest developments in the region, including the Middle East peace push and the war on terrorism.

In an interview with CBS News' Charlie Rose, His Majesty stressed the need for a strategic and holistic approach to better deal with terrorist organizations that actually are the same - merely have different names, but share the same beliefs.

The King said that battling terrorism is our war and is a problem that Muslims need to take ownership of.
