5 die in accidents during National Day fete

Date:

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  Despite police warnings and elaborate guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) for the 43rd National Day celebrations, five people died and 42 others were injured in 28 traffic accidents across the UAE between December 2 and 6.

Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director-General of Traffic Coordination Department, Ministry of Interior, said they included eight cases of vehicles overturning, 13 collisions, five run-over incidents and two others.

The leading cause of the accidents was sudden swerving € as this resulted in eight accidents, two deaths and 10 injuries € followed by speeding that resulted in five accidents leaving one dead and five injured. Tailgating led to four accidents and left eight injured, while 11 other accidents were attributed to speeding, entering a road without checking if it is clear and jumping the red signal, leading to two deaths and injuries to 14. Not sticking to designated lanes and failing to pay attention to the road and driving recklessly left five people injured.

Brig Al Zaabi said the victims had to pay a heavy price for the irresponsible behaviour, recklessness and failure to abide by traffic rules by certain drivers.

He also reiterated the commitment of the Traffic and Patrols Directorates in the UAE to ensure that all abide by traffic laws during holidays and events to guarantee public safety. In a precautionary measure, the MoI had released a set of rules for decorating cars and parades during National Day celebrations to ensure no such incidents take place.
