Oman disqualified in team event at Arab golf meet

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Oman team which was left with a player short after a team member was taken ill on Sunday was disqualified from the team event of the Pan-Arab Golf Championship which is currently underway in Riyadh Saudi Arabia.

A three-member team comprising Oman's No 1 golfer Azaan al Rumhy his brother Hamed al Rumhy and Yousuf al Balushi are in Riyadh for the tournament that features 52 golfers from 13 countries.

However on the opening day of the team event on Sunday Balushi was struck down by a stomach bug.

Azaan shot a round of 78 and Hamed returned with a card of 84 but with just two golfers on the field the organising committee disqualified Oman as competition rules state that a team should field three players for the team event.

It is the first time that Oman has been disqualified at an Arab-level event.

Despite repeated attempts to contact them the Oman Golf Committee (OGC) officials were unavailable for comment.

It is learnt that usually Oman sends a four-member squad for Arab-level tournaments but this time chose to send three golfers to Riyadh. Azaan and Hamed however are playing in the individual event.

The Omani delegation in Riyadh is being headed by Mundhir al Barwani the OGC chairman and is accompanied by Ahmed al Jhdhamy the OGC vice-chairman.
