Malaysia plans heavier penalties for givers of bribes


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Prime Minister said that although Malaysias achievement in the rankings of the Corruption Perception Index had improved to 50 this year out of 175 countries compared with 53 previously matters concerning corruption and power abuse had become public concern.

Putrajaya: The Malaysian government proposes to amend relevant laws next year to impose heavier penalties on those who offer or give bribes Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said on Monday according to the Bernama News Agency.



He said that imposing heavier penalties on those who offered or gave bribes was seen as appropriate because not only those who accepted bribes should be punished.



“While we have targeted the receivers the givers should also be severely punished because corruption can destroy all that we have built in this country” Bernama quoted him as saying while addressing the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM) in Putrajaya.
