Reconciliation act benefits 15,000 militants - Algerian official

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Marwan Ezzi, in charge of the implementation of the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation, said Sunday 15,000 militants who voluntarily yielded themselves to security services, benefited from the amnesty stipulated in the Charter.

The Charter, issued in 1994, was appended to the civil concord act of 1999 and the peace and reconciliation act of 2005, he pointed out.

Nearly 2,400 members of armed groups, who were detained, have been granted amnesty since the national reconciliation act took force in 2006, he revealed.

Ezzi noted that 7,000 families of persons, who were rendered missing after the security unrest in early 1990s, received compensations amounting to USD 7,000 each.

The authorizes are working to address the status of 500 children, ranging between five and 15 years, who were born in mountainous areas after the security turmoil.

The Algerian army killed 192 militants last year compared to 17,000 in 1992, he added.
