Qatar- Hosszu smashes 2 more records

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hungary's Katinka Hosszu savoured another successful outing at the 12th FINA World Swimming Championship (25m) when she broke two more records in Doha yesterday.

It was another eventful day at the Hamad Aquatic Center which saw five more world records tumble with 'The Iron Lady' stealing the limelight for the second successive day.

Hosszu, who broke world record in women's 100m backstroke on Thursday, showed further improvement on the third day of the championship setting new world records in women's 200m backstroke and women's 100m individual medley.

The 25-year-old displayed a consistent show in all the laps at the 200m backstroke to become the first lady to break the 2:00 barrier in the category, finishing the race in one minute and 59.23 seconds. She overcame the two minutes and 00.03 second-record made by Melissa Franklin of the United States in 2011.

Emily Seebohm of Australia took the silver medal with a time of two minutes and 00.13 seconds while Sayaka Akasae of Japan claimed bronze medal in the event.

Just minutes after the triumph, Hosszu returned to win gold medal in women's 100m individual medley with a time of 56.7 seconds, bettering her own by 16 milliseconds.

Siobhan-Marie Oconnor of Great Britain led the race but Hosszu gained pace when it was needed to confine Oconnor to silver medal. Seebohm grabbed the bronze medal.

Frenchman Florent Manaudou took the honour in men's competitions, smashing five-year-old record by South Africa's Roland Schoeman in the men's 50m freestyle category.

Manaudou raced to victory in 20.26, just 0.4 milliseconds ahead of the previous record.

"I am delighted at setting the world record because I was not expecting it," said the French swimmer.

"I was just aiming to win the gold medal. Now having achieved the world record, I am very satisfied with my performance."

Marco Orsi of Italy and Ceaser Cielo Filho of Brazil won the silver and bronze medals respectively in the event.

Meanwhile, the team events saw the Denmark and the Netherlands setting new world records.

In the first race of the day, Denmark bettered their own world record in the women's medley 4x50m with a finish in one minute and 44.04 seconds. Their previous record was one minute and 45.92 second which was set in December last year.

The third day's proceedings which started with the world record also ended in a similar fashion with the Netherlands reigning supreme in the women's 4x100m freestyle with a time of three minutes and 26.53 seconds to better their six-year old world record.
