Qatar- QRC attends GCC meeting on major humanitarian crises


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A delegation of Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) participated in the second meeting of the Committee of Red Crescent Societies in the GCC to discuss major regional humanitarian issues.

The two-day meeting was hosted by Kuwait Red Crescent in Kuwait City, attended by 14 representatives of the GCC Secretariat-General and Red Crescent societies in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

They discussed humanitarian issues and the most significant aspects of joint action by GCC national societies, with a focus on the Syrian crisis.

They also reviewed the minutes of the first meeting of the Permanent Working Group on the Humanitarian Situation in Syria, including proposals to be adopted by GCC national societies.

Also discussed were matters including helping the distressed people in Yemen, and the displaced in Iraq amid deteriorating security conditions, unified GCC stances at regional and international levels, following up on Seville Agreement deliberations of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, international disaster response law guidelines, promotion of humanitarian action perception in GCC countries, field visits, joint training, conferences and workshops, coordinated emergency appeal response, and restoring family links.

The meeting recommended that QRC organise a visit for representative of GCC national societies to Lebanon to examine the most urgent needs of Syrian refugees, view working projects, explore the possibility of having a land plot to establish a new GCC refugee camp, and identify mechanisms of coordination and cooperation with concerned organisations in the country.

The UAE Red Crescent was assigned to coordinate with the Yemeni Red Crescent to identify the most important needs and humanitarian action mechanism for the GCC.

GCC national societies will also report to the GCC Secretariat-General about their humanitarian assistance to displaced Iraqi people.
