Abu Dhabi: The video of the 38-year-old Emirati suspect who killed an American teacher inside the washroom of a shopping mall in the Capital has gone viral with many expressing shock and disbelief that this incident occurred in the relatively safe and secure country like the UAE.

The arrest of the suspect 48 hours later has further triggered much discussion but this time accompanied with relief and admiration on the swift action by the security forces here.

The first CCTV footage released by the Security Media Department of the Ministry of Interior of the Abaya-clad woman early this week has attracted over 2 million views on YouTube. The follow-up video of the planting of a bomb by the same woman outside an American doctor’s house and the police storming the suspect’s house was also widely-circulated and shared hundred times at all networking sites.

The Facebook (FB) page of the Abu Dhabi Police is flooded with praises commendations and echoes of pride.

“Well done guys. You didn’t waste time you acted fast and that’s how you caught the criminal! That proves that you are on standby 24/7 to intervene when needed to rescue and protect the country! God bless the UAE! Thank you” commended FB user Marie-louise Saghbini.

“The UAE will remain safe and secure always thanks to God then to the UAE Ruler and police heroes” posted another FB user Jana Sef. “Proud of Abu Dhabi Police. UAE great” said Raashu V K Kuthuparamba.

In a Press conference on Thursday Lt-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior said the suspect targeted her victims based on nationality alone and had no personal enmities.

However the question remains if the stabbing of Ibolya Ryan 47 a mother of three or the planting of the home-made bomb with the intention to harm the family of the Egyptian-American doctor are random acts For what purpose What is the intention

Colonel Dr. Rashid Borshid head of the Criminal Investigation Department at the Abu Dhabi Police told reporters on Thursday that the case is currently under investigation.

Who was Ibolya Ryan

In a Press release sent out by British Columbia-based Footprints Recruiting on Thursday the recruitment company identified the victim at Boutik Mall on December 1 as Ibolya Ryan.

In her featured profile at the company’s website it identified her as Hungarian who was born and raised in Romania but was trained as a teacher in the US and Europe.

She was living in Abu Dhabi and was teaching at one of the public schools since September 2013. In her goals she noted her intention to “gain some proficiency in Arabic” while in the UAE.For her reason in teaching abroad she said: “I wanted to experience the Arab world and experience their culture and daily life. I am working in a very traditional neighbourhood and it is very unique to learn and understand their culture. My co-teacher is a very special Emirati lady who made me understand their beliefs and culture. She just got married and I was able to witness a traditional Emirati wedding.”

Ibi as she’s known by friends is survived by her three children – 11-year old twin boys and a 13-year old daughter - and an ex-husband.

Fundraising for Ryan’s kids

As tribute for her and her family Footprints has launched a fundraising drive for Ryan and her kids. As of Friday the ‘Ibolya Ryan’s - Kids Education Fund’ had raised $6095. The goal was to raise $100000 (http://www.gofundme.com/ibolya).

The text below the scheme read: “The family is in need of financial assistance to bring Ibolya back to the US for funeral expenses and establish an educational trust for the children.”

A post on Facebook by one user Panos Elena said: “We only met her once but she left us with the impression of a wonderful person. She was coping alone with life and for sure she didn’t deserve such an end. It is so unfair! Ibolya’s life was suddenly terminated only because of her origin and her colour.”

“UAE authorities were able to arrest the woman suspect who committed the heinous act within 48 hours. We kindly ask the leaders of this great nation to take care of the children and give them the opportunity of a better future. Ibi rest in peace. Our donation is the least we can do for your children.”
