Hosszu sets a new 100m backstroke world record

(MENAFN- Arab Times) DOHA Dec 4 (AFP): Katinka Hosszu set a new world record in the 100m backstroke at the World Short-Course Swimming Championships in Doha on Thursday.

The swimmer nicknamed the 'Iron Lady' responded to being upstaged by Mireia Belmonte on Wednesday the Spaniard winning the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley in world record time.

The Hungarian made her move on the third length at the Hamad Aquatic Centre and held off the fast-finishing Emily Seebohm to touch in 55.03 and slice 0.20sec off Shiho Sakai's record from 2009.

Brazil took more than two seconds off the fledgling world record set by Russia on Thursday morning in the men's 4x50m medley relay at the World Short-Course Swimming Championships in Doha.

Russia had clocked 1:32.78 en-route to the final at the Hamad Aquatic Centre in an event which governing body FINA have only just started to recognise for record status.

However it was the Brazilian quartet who set the new standard on Thursday night brought home by former Olympic 50m freestyle champion Cesar Cielo in 1:30.51.

It was the fifth world record of the five-day event after Mireia Belmonte's double strike on Wednesday night the Netherlands' women's 4x200m freestyle relay and the Russians Thursday morning.

South Africa's Chad le Clos set a new world record of 48.44sec in the 100m butterfly at the World Short-Course Swimming Championships in Doha on Thursday.

The 22-year-old had already threatened the world record this season just 0.08sec off Evgeny Korotyshkin's mark at the World Cup in Hong Kong in September.

Le Clos cut 0.04sec off Korotyshkin's record from November 2009 all the more impressive given that was during the performance-enhancing suit era.
