Oman trounces Thailand


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's hockey team made a rousing start to its campaign in the fourth Men's Junior AHF Cup qualifiers as it trounced Thailand 7-0 in Dhaka Bangladesh on Monday. 

Oman led 1-0 at the end of first half but came back strongly to pump in six more goals in the second half.

Seven of the Oman team players scored goals in the lopsided match. Muhanna al Hasani opened the scoring for Oliver Kurtz's men in the third minute.

The floodgates opened in the 42nd minute when Khalid al Balushi scored the second goal. Ahmed al Nofali (45th) minute Rashid al Hosni (52nd) Ahmad Bait Barkah (56th) Imad al Hasani (60th) and Shafi al Shatari (65th) scored in quick succession.

In the other match of the day hosts Bangladesh thrashed Chinese Taipei 7-0.

Khorshedur Rahman Moinul Islam and Milon scored a couple of goals each while Ashraful added one for the host nation.

Oman will next meet Sri Lanka on Wednesday followed by matches against Bangladesh on Thursday and then Chinese Taipei on December 6.

The tournament is a qualifying event for the Men's Junior Asia Cup which will be held in Kuantan Malaysia in 2015. That tournament will serve as the qualifiers for the junior hockey World Cup which will be held in 2016.

Five countries - Bangladesh Chinese-Taipei Oman Sri Lanka and Thailand will compete for the two places available to advance to the Junior Asia Cup.

Chinese-Taipei and Oman are past winners of the event.
