Iran deputy minister says ties with Oman to grow further

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The relations between Oman and Iran will see increased development in the coming period Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs said on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference at the Iranian Embassy in Muscat through an interpreter Hossein Amir Abdollahian said 'The relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Sultanate of Oman are exemplary in the region.'

He said that during this visit his accompanying delegation to Muscat discussed security and customs agreements and during talks with Omani officials received the good news of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Providing an update on upcoming bilateral activities Abdollahian said that the joint economic committees of both countries will meet in Muscat on January 6. At the same time an Iranian trade exhibition will be held at the Oman International Exhibition Centre.

The deputy minister said that Iran's senior vice president has invited H H Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud al Said to visit Iran soon. Covering regional issues Abdollahian said Iran would play an active role in combatting what it considers terrorism.

'We have provided serious and real support to Syria and Iraq in addressing terrorism and we will continue it in the future. We will not allow Syria to become like Libya and Somalia.'

However he said Iran was sceptical of the so-called alliance formed to fight the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

'We are not pleased with the alliance and we don't look positively at the topic of an alliance between the US and some countries. We have followed what this alliance has done to address terrorist groups. We have not seen any serious or useful step by this alliance to address Islamic State.'

He explained Iran's role in the region saying that the country can help provide stability and security. 'We see that security in the region is the security of Iran. 'Addressing terrorism in the region is of serious concern and sensitive to Iran.' Iran's Ambassador to Oman H E Ali Akbar Sibeveih was also present at the press conference.
