Star Wars trailer shows UAE desert terrain

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  The Abu Dhabi Western Region desert features prominently in the brand new trailer for next year's Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

The 90-second clip, which has racked up more than 37 million views in just four days, shows British actors John Boyega and Daisy Ridley in the UAE desert, the former dressed in a Storm Trooper outfit and the latter riding a hovering vehicle.

The clip for J.J. Abrams' highly-anticipated sci-fi flick, set to release on December 18, 2015, also shows a spherical droid racing around the sandy terrain and the Millennium Falcon battling enemy forces.

The trailer has provoked controversy among die-hard Star Wars fans for altering the classic look of the lightsaber weapon, while suggestions persist that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch will make a surprise appearance.

Abrams brought his cast and crew to the UAE capital in May 2013 to shoot the desert scenes. Abu Dhabi will also provide the backdrop for the upcoming blockbuster Furious 7, the latest in the Fast & Furious film franchise which will star Vin Diesel and The Rock.
