Saudi- Investors blamed for failure to transfer vegetable market

(MENAFN- Arab News) Official spokesman in the Jeddah Municipality Sami Al-Ghamdi said that the delay in transferring the Jeddah Central Vegetable market to its new location in Abrug Alragamah is due to investors' lack of seriousness in implementing the project.

Al-Ghamdi said that according to the contract the investors had been given a period of three years within which to complete the project.

He said that the investors failed to comply with the project requirements and after receiving several warning letters had finally given up on the project.

'The contract has now been issued to another company for a period of 25 years starting from the date of approval of the project by the municipality' Al-Ghamdi said.

He cited the overcrowded conditions at the Central Market as the reason for its relocation.

Head of auctioneers in the Central Market Mutassim Abuznadah also pointed to the congestion which he said was hindering trade practices. 'The market was established 35 years ago when the area was almost empty but the situation is very different now' he said.

Eida Al-Harthy a trader in the vegetable market and member of the Nutrients Committee at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce agreed that the market was failing to meet the needs and requirements of the traders due to the lack of space limited parking for trucks and difficult access.

Al-Harthy said these factors had led to poor functioning of the market despite the large volume of produce being exported to Jeddah which is higher than that of Riyadh Dammam and the Dubai vegetable markets. He called on the municipality to expedite the transfer process to the new location.

Attiya Al-Ghamdi a 75-year-old merchant and one of the oldest traders in the Jeddah Central market said the market had been moved several times over the past decades. 'It was first located in Bab Sharif then moved to King Saud Palace then near Ain Al-Khazanat and finally to its current location 35 years ago' he said. This area was chosen because of the large vacant space but did not take into account the rapid urban development in Jeddah.
