Interior minister, Japanese envoy discuss ties

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)  His Majesty King Abdullah II's recent visit to Japan reflects the "qualitative improvement" in the level of Jordanian-Japanese relations in various fields, Minister of Interior Hussein Majali said.

During a meeting last night with the Japanese Ambassador to Jordan, Shunichi Sakurai, Majali stressed the need to maximize the strategic projects and "the distinguished relationship in the interest of the two countries." Majali valued the Japanese support for the Kingdom in the economic, political and security fields.

The meeting also touched on regional developments and projects carried out by the Japanese government to support the Kingdom's economy, which has been hit by the influx of Syrian refugees.

The minister explained that Jordan urgently needs to build 72 schools to accommodate the increasing number of Syrian refugees, indicating that local schools in the host communities had been forced to run double-shift classrooms to cope with the overcrowding caused by the large number of refugee students.

He said that the Syrian crisis and the continued flow of refugees into the Kingdom had placed tremendous pressure on the country's economic, education, health, security, water, energy and infrastructure sectors.

Majali called on the Japanese envoy to visit the refugee reception and accommodation centers to take a first-hand look at the situation and to see the quality of services provided to them and the negative impact the influx is having on the host communities.

The ambassador said he understood the fact that Jordan needed more aid to deal with the humanitarian repercussions of the Syrian crisis.
