Tunisia signs three cooperation program agreements with UN bodies

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Tunisia and three different UN agencies signed three cooperation programs aimed at helping the North African countries in some domains, Tunisian foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Tunisia signed the cooperation programs with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), and UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

Quoted by the Tunisian Press agency (TAP), the ministry said the move is part of the 2015-19 Complementary Development Programme, in reference to the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNADF) for Tunisia, which was signed last March and worth USD 64 million, Foreign Minister Mongi Hamdi said at the signing ceremony in the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The UN programme seeks to underpin Tunisia's democratic transition in good governance, sustainable development as well as administrative and social justice reform, the minister said.

For her part, UN Representative in Tunisia Maria-Luisa Fornara said support of social and health policies in Tunisia, the reform of the education system and the promotion of child protection legislation are the thrusts of UNICEF action plan.

The action plan is geared towards a better basic education and aims to fight school dropout in its education reform facet, she added.

Up to 100,000 Tunisian children aged six to 16 years old drop out of school each year, Fornara indicated.

On another front, UNDP Resident Representative in Tunisia Mounir Thabet said these cooperation programs fall in line with the implementation of UNADF which targets a new economic model centered on the fight against regional disparities, social protection and education.
