UN report says more than 1,000 Iraqis killed last month


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Violence in Iraq has killed and injured more than 3,666 people during November, a UN report said Tuesday.

Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov, said in the report that the number of civilians killed in November has reached 997, among them 61 police officers, while civilians injured totaling 1,826 people, among them 71 officers.

In the report, Mladenov added that 296 killed from security forces, including the Kurdish Peshmerga, and 608 were injured from various security forces.

Mladenov said that violence in Iraq has left around 12,000 people dead and 22,000 injured, mostly civilians since the start of 2014.

The UN official also called on Iraqi political, religious and social leaders to rise above their differences and work to consolidate the democratic process.

According to the report the worst affected Governorate was Baghdad, which has seen an increase in violence over the last months with the offensive carried out by the Islamic State.
