Qatar- 40 primary school teachers honoured

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Over 40 primary school teachers from as many Independent schools were honoured recently.

Hosted by Qatar University's National Center for Educator Development and ExxonMobil Qatar, the event marked the end of a week-long innovative professional development programme that aimed to enhance maths and science teaching skills.

Under the guidance of instructors, teachers took part in interactive activities in a classroom setting, and learnt the use of active learning and inquiry-based teaching techniques to engage students and promote their interest in maths and science.

The Supreme Education Council provided maths and science specialists who provided teachers with insight into the academy and its mission.

Their participation ensures support for graduating teachers on their return to the classroom.

"Qatar has a responsibility to invest in education to help develop people and communities and foster intellectual capacity to address future challenges," said Prof Dr Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad, President, QU. "With our partner, ExxonMobil Qatar, we will continue to work on projects such as Qatar University ExxonMobil Teacher Academy to enhance educational excellence in science and maths so that students can excel in leadership roles in society and the global workforce."

Bart Cahir, President and General Manager, ExxonMobil Qatar Inc, said, "The quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of teachers and principals, since student learning is the product of what goes on in classrooms. The academy allows us to get into our students' classrooms through their teachers to provide them with skills and confidence they need to guarantee excellence in teaching maths and science, and an overall quality education for children."

The academy is part of a long-term commitment to education by ExxonMobil. As it continues to support initiatives that promote active interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education, the company is committed to supporting professional development of teachers and promoting women's involvement.
