20pc pregnant women in Qatar undergo Cesarean section: Expert

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) At least 20 percent pregnant women undergo Caesarian section due to health reasons in Qatar, says an obstetrics and gynaecology expert.

About 50 percent of women go through Cesarean section during their first pregnancy, said Prof Ahmed Badereldeen (pictured), Director, Feto-Maternal Medicine Centre, and Professor of Obstetrics, Weill Cornell Medical College € Qatar (WCMC-Q).

In a presentation on 'Prevention of the first Cesarean' at the Sidra Symposia Series € Hot Topics in Obstetrics and Gynaecology - he said the number of women undergoing Cesarean section is increasing in all countries. "The only difference is how high it is going," he said.

A Caesarean section is often performed when a normal delivery would put the life or health of the baby or the mother.

Some operations are performed on request without a medical reason, a practice authorities would like to reduce.

For the first time as a collaboration between Sidra Medical and Research Center and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), the two-day symposium covered latest obstetrics and gynaecology issues in the Middle East.

Dr Catherine Emmerson, Consultant and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Sunderland Royal Hospital, UK, said reasons like obesity, blood pressure and diabetics could lead to a Cesarean section. "A woman should consider being medically fit even before pregnancy," she said.

The symposium aimed to educate the local and regional medical community, stimulating discussion with experts on the future of obstetrics and gynaecology and the development of the profession.

Making an important contribution to professional recognition and growth of obstetricians and gynaecologists in Qatar, RCOG recognised 33 physicians as Fellows during a Fellows' Admission ceremony.

Fellowships are awarded to those the RCOG Council considers to have contributed to the advancement of science or practice of obstetrics and gynaecology and furthered the interests of the speciality.

Dr Lolwa Mohd Alansari, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine, and Assistant Professor, WCMC-Qatar, was chosen as the first Qatari female clinician for the honour.
