Cigar and cigarillo (excluding eco-cigarillos) smoking has a long history in Germany but has suffered from the public smoking bans in the foodservice channel and other public places which were imposed in 2007 and later. The inability to smoke within foodservice outlets has also forced smokers outdoors more often in terms of smoking cigarillos.

Competitive Landscape

Dannemann was the only company in cigars and cigarillos in 2013 which held a double-digit volume share. The company’s position can primarily be attributed to its popular Dannemann Moods brand which is widely recognised and available almost everywhere. 

Industry Prospects

The wider cigar category is predicted a decline in both volume and value terms over the forecast period. Cigars excluding cigarillos however is expected to achieve positive volume growth. The overall category however will see a sharp decline in 2015 when new regulations come into effect which will classify as cigarettes all those cigarillos which have a wrapper made from reconstituted tobacco.
