Studentspeak: Are School canteens affordable and healthy?

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  UAE students speak their views on the subject.

Our Own Indian School, Dubai

The canteen in our school is actually run by an outside company and they sell a variety of foods. However, they are neither cheap nor healthy. I advise my friends not to eat the junk food (sold there) but they are influenced by taste. Also, they tell me that their parents go to work and can't make food for them. I think this is the reason why schools don't reduce the rates. As a student I can't do much but express my opinion.

School canteens are an integral part of the school environment and an ideal place to encourage healthy eating. Most schools have introduced healthy food in canteens because of high rates of obesity in Gulf countries. However, there are many children who completely depend on canteen food which also ... (includes) chocolates and chips. Sometimes these foods make us feel lazy during class hours.

School canteens are an essential part of our school routine. It plays an important role especially if students forget their tiffin and want to have (something to eat). They can go to the canteen and buy whatever they want; whatever is healthy for them. But canteens should sell healthy snacks which don't affect our health.

The food in our canteen is quite affordable. They've done a good job of providing quality food at low costs. Some schools might charge a little extra. However, it should be understood that firstly, students from all walks of life attend school and secondly, given the long hours that we spend in school, the tendency to have more ... (during) different breaks increases.

Today, students are in school for at least six hours a day, five days a week. With long and tiring classes, hunger is definitely an obstacle we need to overcome. School canteens thus play an important role. Our canteen is relatively affordable for the kind of food they provide. The price has increased ... A sandwich, which cost 75 fils (some time) back ... (costs almost double now) ... It is affordable ... but may not be the best in quality.

The food which is available in school canteens is not good. Some parents are working and they provide their children with some money and ask them to buy from the canteen ... These students buy all kinds of fast food and mouth-watering chocolates. I feel that the school management must shut down the school canteens and make it mandatory to bring home-made foods.
