Ashraf Ghani says NATO, Afghanistan ties enter new phase


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and the Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah to NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Monday.

"Their presence here at NATO Headquarters is a great expression of the
strong partnership between NATO and Afghanistan," Stoltenberg told reporters.

"I warmly welcome the ratification of the security agreements with NATO and with the United States. We now have in place what we need to move forward with our new mission, Resolute Support. To train, advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces from the first of January 2015," he said.

On his part, Ghani said "NATO and Afghanistan are entering a new phase of their partnership. On December 31, the combat mission of NATO will end. Afghan security forces are ready and willing to assume a patriotic duty to defend our country and safeguard the world." "On Janury 1, 2015, we look to the new phase of partnership which has been earned through sacrifice and shared responsibility," he added.

Both Ghani and Abdullah will participate in Tuesday's meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers. The UN and the European Union have also been invited to attend.
