Police Killings in Rio Spark Security Worries

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency)  Brazilian security officials are meeting to map out a strategy to combat a recent wave of police killings in Rio de Janeiro state.
The office of Rio's top security official said Jose Mariano Beltrame was meeting Monday with the heads of the military and civil police to discuss the issue. The time and place of the talks were not made public.
The meeting follows a wave of attacks targeting police that left five officers and one soldier dead in less than a week. Officials have said the slayings are not related, but the uptick in violence comes amid a generalized worsening of crime in Rio, AP reported.
This year, 18 officers in Rio have been killed while on duty, while another 88 off-duty officers were slain.
