Saudi- Govt trying to bring nine more Gitmo inmates home
(MENAFN- Arab News) The Interior Ministry is working for the release of another nine Saudis from Guantanamo Bay in Cuba according to Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki ministry spokesman.
The ministry recently confirmed that a group of specialists from within the Kingdom had been sent to the notorious detention center to study the possibility of having them released sooner and to reassure their families that they are in good health.
The announcement comes following the release of a Saudi inmate on Saturday.
'The family of Mohammed Al-Zahrani has been notified of his arrival and the ministry is doing its best to facilitate their reunion' he said.
A periodic committee that had been set up to monitor the condition of detainees had approved Al-Zahrani's repatriation and the US Congress had then notified Riyadh of the move.
'Al-Zahrani will join the Mohammed Bin Naif Counseling and Care Center for rehab' said Al-Turki.
Al-Zahrani 45 had been imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay since August 2002.
The US Ministry of Defense had taken into account information about the degree of his involvement in Al-Qaeda when sentencing him.
