Obesity Costs Global Economy 2 Trillion

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Dubai November 20 (QNA) - Around 2.1 billion overweight or obese people 30% of global population inflict a cost of US $2 Trillion on world economy a new report says.

This financial liability is 2.8% of global economic output same cost that an armed conflict or smoking has on world economy a report by McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) says.

If this growth continues at its current pace the report projects almost half of the world's adult population to be overweight or obese by 2030.

This would further increase personal social and economic costs says the report titled 'Overcoming Obesity: An Initial Economic Analysis'.

To stop this growth MGI lists interventions deployed globally and assesses their cost-effectiveness.

MGI studied 74 interventions on obesity in 18 areas being discussed or piloted somewhere around the world. It then conducted a meta-analysis of research available. Of the 74 interventions there was sufficient evidence to estimate the potential cost and impact of 44 of them.

Steps taken by industry government healthcare and NGOs are necessary to support behavioural changes in society the report said. (QNA)
