Senior religious party leader gunned down in S. Pakistan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A senior leader of religious political party Jamiat Ulema e Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Khalid Mehmood Soomro, was shot dead in southern Sukkur city of Pakistan on Saturday.

According to police, the attack took place when Soomro, the Secretary General of the JUI-F for the southern Sindh province, was leaving a mosque attached to a seminary in Sukkur.

The armed men entered the Khosa Goth area and opened fire at Soomro, killing the religious leader on the spot, said police. The assailants escaped the scene immediately after the assassination.

Soomro, who also represented his party in the Senate from 2006-2012, was in Sukkur to participate in a conference. His body was immediately shifted to the nearby hospital.

Last month, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman escaped a fatal attack in southwestern Balochistan province.
