Egypt- Mubarak acquitted of killing charges


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Cairo Criminal Court on Saturday turned down a case where the ex-president Hosni Mubarak is accused of being behind killing of protestors during the "June 25 revolution" that flared up in 2011.

The tribunal ruled as not guilty the former minister of interior, Habib Al-Adli, and his aides, with respect of identical accusations.

Mubarak was also declared innocent in the case of exporting gas to Israel at unreasonably low prices. He along with his two sons, Alaa and Jamal, were acquitted of some corruption charges, namely being granted villas by the businessman, Hussein Salem.

Reading cases' papers, the chief judge stated that 239 people were killed and 1,588 others were wounded in the events that erupted on June 25, 2011.

The court session, held at the police academy in eastern Cairo, is proceeding trial of Mubarak and his aides for charges of killing activists, spreading chaos across the nation and creating "leadership vacuum." Salem, who has been at large, was prosecuted in absentia for corruption, mishandling of public funds and exporting gas to Israel for cheap prices.

The prosecution started on May 11, 2013. Since then a series of hearings have been held.

Mubarak is held behind bars for three years. His two sons are serving four years. All of them had been convicted of embezzling public funds.
