Abu Dhabi Dialogue 3 approves labor awareness initiative

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))  The third ministerial meeting of the Abu Dhabi Dialogue (ADD-3) adopted on Thursday a regional labor awareness initiative for the Asian migrant workers.

The final statement of the meeting, hosted by Kuwait gathered representatives of 17 Asian countries, said they reviewed the collaborative approaches to addressing the temporary labor mobility.

The regional labor awareness initiative aims to broaden common understanding of issues, practices and policies in the area of contractual labor in Asia and enhance cooperation between labor sending and recipient countries.

The conferees agreed to follow up the implementation and results of the initiative which constitutes an experimental program for building the capacity of the expatriate workers and facilitating the issuance and accreditation of their professional certificates, according to the statement.

The program will make employers better able to select the workers who are most suitable and skilled to fill the vacancies, the statement noted, calling on the competent international organizations to back up this initiative.

The conferees welcomed the proposal of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to conduct a field survey on the labor mobility between Asian labor sending countries and the recipient Gulf states.

They invited the IOM to present the outcome of the planned survey to the coming ADD, due in Abu-Dhabi next year in order to enable the participating countries launch bilateral and multilateral partnerships and ensure fairer employment practices.

They also welcomed the IOM call for cooperation with the ADD member states in lowering the costs of labor mobility, protect the workers' rights, and prevent illegal contractual practices.
