Qatar win Gulf Cup for third time

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Qatar clinched the Gulf Cup for the third time after beating hosts Saudi Arabia, 2-1, in the final at Riyadh's King Fahd International Stadium on Wednesday.

After being one down, Mahdi Ali fought back for Qatar, levelling just two minutes after Saud Kariri's early opener in the first half in an electrifying atmosphere at the 68,752-seat spectator-packed stadium.

The second half witnessed numerous chances for both teams to go up, but the deadlock was finally broken with Boualem Khoukhi's strike in the 57th minute, which stopped Saudi Arabia from clinching a fourth title.

Qatar are now on equal footing with both Saudi Arabia and Iraq with three titles apiece, while Kuwait, who are due to host the next Gulf Cup in 2016, still hold on to their record 10 titles.
