Kuwait- Loopholes led to amendment of traffic law - MoI

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Interior Ministry Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs Maj Gen Abdullah Mehanna said Wednesday said the amended traffic law, to take effect after being issued in the official gazette, is meant to fix loopholes in the current law.

The new law has been submitted by the ministry's legal affairs department to Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, who approved it yesterday, the official told reporters this evening.

"The new law tightens the controls over the issuance of driving licenses for expatriates and renewal of vehicle licenses with a view to reducing traffic jams and cutting the number of cars, particularly the dating ones," he said.

The law stipulates that the ceiling of salary, entitling an expatriate to get a driving license, be raised to KD 600 a month and a qualified expat should have a valid two-year residency and a university degree, he said.

"The Interior Ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor to link between the periods of residency and driving licenses in order to prevent foul play by some expats who manipulated some loopholes in the current law," Maj.-Gen. Mhanna pointed out.

In the last nine months, the traffic dept. issued 38,406 driving licenses and registered 152,400 direct violations and 4,000 indirect ones, added.
