Trivandrum: Kerala has sought a new committee consisting of national and international experts to study the safety of the 119-year-old Mullapperiyar dam situated in the state and owned and operated by Tamil Nadu. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the all-party meeting convened by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government here on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by leaders of all parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A delegation comprising Chief Minister Oommen Chandy leader of opposition V S Achuthanandan and Water Resource Minister P J Joseph will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and place this demand before him. Talking to reporters after the meeting Joseph said that the date of the delegation’s visit to New Delhi will be decided after confirming the availability of the Prime Minister. The meeting was convened after Tamil Nadu refused to lower the water level in the dam to 136 feet. The government has also moved the Supreme Court with a plea to restrict Tamil Nadu from increasing the level beyond 136 feet.

The water level at the dam had touched 142 ft early this month after a gap of 35 years. The neighbouring state had insisted on maintaining the water level at 142 feet on the basis of the Supreme Court verdict allowing it to increase the level from 136 ft to 142 ft. Kerala made the plea as one spillway gates was not functional. It had also pointed out the seepage on the outer wall of the dam as a matter of serious concern.
